I started with a 63″ X 31 1/2″ (160cm X 80cm) Lagkapten desktop from Ikea and designed the mount around it’s hole pattern. This one broke with middling force on 10″ of leverage. I deemed it to be better than I actually expected, if not as good as I needed.

I decided to try more infill for the second test, imagining that a more dense part would be a better solution. It only marginally withstood my effort to break it.

A friend suggested that I add a fillet from the leg socket to the edge, and recess the screw holes. Being a stubborn man, I decided to try for middle ground. It still broke, but higher up on the socket.

The design I landed on, was a return to the previous design, with a thicker wall, the fillet to the screw holes, increased resolution (instead of printing layers at .24mm, i printed this at .12mm), and a return to 20% infill.

This ended up being the end design since the bracket withstood the torque and overcame the screws that held it to my work bench.

And here we are. Another two weeks of nearly constant printing for the brackets and feet, cut the legs and support beams, and assemble the finished product.

I do have another two desks to build. One of which is going to reuse the old desk top (a larger version of the one on the completed desk) which will become a work bench for the printer to get it off the floor.

I also have a revision in mind to stabilize the tables… photos and designs to follow in another post.

Lessons learned.

  • Increasing the resolution and the wall count can have more effect than increasing the density of the infill.
  • variations in construction won’t necessarily have predictable effects on the finished product.

Adventures in book binding https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/adventures-in-book-binding/ https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/adventures-in-book-binding/#respond Tue, 14 Dec 2021 03:11:09 +0000 https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/?p=640 My grandmother wrote a book many years ago now. Being dyslexic she needed to dictate the story to someone who typed it up on a typewriter. As far as I am aware there are only two copies of this manuscript, and I am in possession of one.

I was asked to digitize this book, and have been in possession of it for a number of years at this point. One challenge which has been preventatively complex is the pages are loose, and I haven’t been able to think of a way to handle the situation in a way that I can be happy with.

My most recent idea has been to bind the transcript. I don’t want to be overly destructive to the pages If I can avoid it though, so i decided to practice on my calculus book.

I learned a lot in this process. Perhaps most importantly, it failed to meet my expectations. Not least of which is how badly it destroyed the book while I was lacing it together. The one thing I don’t want to do to my grandmother’s book.

I have one more book, a physics book, that has loose pages that I can attempt once more to prevent this catastrophic outcome.

Going less over the top with the sections and binding it together as a whole effort, was an absolute success.

On the other note, I don’t think I’ll bind Grandma’s book. I don’t want to damage the pages if I can avoid it, and I’ll have to find a better solution.

Koob https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/koob/ https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/koob/#respond Thu, 09 Sep 2021 15:14:00 +0000 https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/?p=632 My mother-in-law introduced us to the game of Koob a couple weeks ago. For a video explaining the rules you can go here.

It’s a fun, yard game with fairly simple rules, and we decided I should make our own pieces, and play with my family when we get together for dinner next.

Router Table https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/router-table/ https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/router-table/#respond Mon, 06 Sep 2021 01:23:15 +0000 https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/?p=615

I purchased a router a while ago, and immediately started thinking it would be nice to have a router table… and here it is.

Because I haven’t shared the Reset yet… there’s the before and after of the clean up process… I’ll sweep the floor later.

Collection before
Strip to hang new items from
Added some garlands and wreaths

We found some wreaths and garlands in a box full of wedding stuff, and I needed to add another section.

My father was gifted a surpluss of tools, some of which were given to me. Of the new items, i acquired two new saws and had nowhere to store them… yet.

Sectioning for pantry
Plastic bottle striping tool

We wanted to make better use of some of the space in our pantry, so I created this to organize our wraps and zip lock bags.

My wife gave me the dragon, but I wanted to mount it before putting it on display.

This one is my DIY version of a bottle slicer to make strips from plastic bottles.

The Royal game of Ur https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/the-royal-game-of-ur/ https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/the-royal-game-of-ur/#respond Tue, 17 Aug 2021 19:25:46 +0000 https://franklin.amateur3dpod.com/?p=526

I came across a video that detailed a 5000 year old board game that was claimed to inspire Backgammon, and decided I wanted to recreate my own version.

I originally tried to engrave the surface, but wasn’t happy with the outcome and ultimately scrapped the project.

The second effort, I used a wood burner and was much more happy with the result.

I started by modifying some D4 dice with pips on two corners, but the paint came off surprisingly fast, so I modified them to have more of the corner painted, and created these cups to reduce the handling of the players.

I’ve had these posters for a while, and they are looking a little worse for wear as a result of push pins and tape. This will make them a little more resilient.
